Dr. Claudia Paz y Paz Bailey – Guatemala’s first female Attorney General.She is a respected criminal law specialist and judge with over 18 years of experience and is also the founder of a human rights organization, theInstitute for Comparative Criminal Studies of Guatemala (ICCPG).
Since being appointed to the Prosecutor’s office in December 2010,Mrs. Paz y Paz has worked tirelessly to ensure perpetrators of mass human rights atrocities face accountability and justice for their crimes.
Mrs. Paz y Paz obtained a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Salamanca (“Criminal Law and Human Rights”). She specialized in Criminology at the University of Salamanca.
Since 1993 she was entrusted with responsibilities related to human rights in Guatemala; Legal Advisor at the Office of Human Rights of the Archbishop of Guatemala; National Consultant for the United Nations Mission on Guatemala, MINUGUA; Investigator at the Commission for the Historical Clarification of Guatemala; Director of the Legal Office of the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Refugees (ACNUR).
